Sad Light Therapy - Seasonal Affective Disorder Therapy

Light therapy, also known as phototherapy, is a cutting edge treatment method involving direct exposure to different light wavelengths such as LEDs, lasers, bright light, and full-spectrum light for a specific time. It is an accepted treatment for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and skin-related problems or enhancements such as Acne vulgaris, eczema, psoriasis, anti-aging, and tanning. To some extent, it has positive effect on ameliorated delayed sleep phase syndrome.

Light therapy mainly triggers melatonin secretion and affects the circadian rhythm. Melatonin helps control sleep and hormone secretion while the circadian rhythm or the biological clocks controls daytime alertness and sleep timing.

The process starts once the user sits close to the light box and his eyes are exposed to light wavelength. Light enters the retina and it will be transmitted to pineal glands by the nerve impulses. Consequently, the pineal gland will control melatonin levels to either delay or advance daytime alertness and sleep timing depending on the need. The session can take at least 15 minutes up to 3 hours. Ideal range for a 30-minute session is 10,000 lux and 20 to 24 inches.

Initial positive effect occurs between 2 to 4 days after starting the light therapy. Full beneficial effects, however, may take up to several weeks.

Light therapy is favored because it is a natural method, non-pharmacological, and more importantly non-invasive. Conversely, it can cause eyestrain, fatigue, sleep disruptions, and irritability. For those with bipolar disorders, it can trigger episodes of mania.
